Chelsea have made another major statement in the transfer market after completing the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a British record £117 million deal. The England international has signed a seven year contract at Stamford Bridge, becoming the most expensive British player in history as the Blues continue to reshape their squad under new manager Xabi Alonso.
The move ends months of speculation over Rogers’ future. Arsenal had identified the 23 year old as their leading attacking target, but Chelsea moved decisively to secure a player they had monitored for more than two years. The deal was driven by sporting directors, co owner Behdad Eghbali, and Alonso, who saw Rogers as a key piece of his long term project.
Rogers arrives after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s brightest attacking talents at Aston Villa. “I’m so excited,” Rogers said after completing the move. “For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid.”
The England international revealed that conversations with Alonso played a huge role in his decision. “It very much fits with the way I see the game, the way I want to play, and the way I want to be me, and be free and express myself. Him being a part of that was a massive factor in me being here.”
Rogers also cannot hide his excitement about linking up with one of his closest friends. Having come through Manchester City’s academy alongside Cole Palmer, the pair will now reunite in west London after years of hoping to play together again.
“I’ve known Cole since I was about 14,” Rogers said. “We’ve been speaking about this for a while. We always would love to have played together. He’s non stop ringing my phone, texting me, and I can’t wait.”
Chelsea will not play European football this season, but the club believes this signing reflects its ambition rather than its current situation. Alonso is building a young, dynamic squad around players capable of growing together, and Rogers fits that vision perfectly.
The pressure that comes with a British record fee will be immense. Yet Chelsea believe they have signed not just one of England’s finest young attackers, but a player capable of becoming the face of their next era.
