The High Court of Ghana in Accra has granted bail to Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, after he was earlier remanded into custody over charges of false publication.

Abronye appeared before the court on a motion for bail pending trial, filed by his legal team led by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, with former Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah moving the application on his behalf.

“We move in terms of the motion paper and pray that the applicant be granted bail pending trial,” counsel for the applicant submitted.

The prosecution, represented by Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai, informed the court that the Republic did not oppose the bail application.

The court subsequently granted Abronye bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties.

As part of the bail conditions, the court directed the NPP communicator to report to the Police CID once every two weeks, surrender all travel documents, and seek permission from the Registrar before travelling outside the court’s jurisdiction.

Abronye’s earlier remand attracted criticism from sections of the New Patriotic Party and some legal analysts, who argued that the decision infringed on his constitutional rights.

However, the presiding judge explained that the initial remand order was based on concerns that the accused could potentially commit another offence if granted immediate bail.
