Voting is currently in progress in Ghana’s Akwatia Constituency as the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds its primary to select a parliamentary candidate for the upcoming September 2 by-election.
Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. across designated voting centres and are expected to close at 4:00 p.m.
Three candidates are vying for the party’s nomination:
Henry Boakye Yiadom, the NDC’s 2024 parliamentary candidate and a former Member of Parliament for Akwatia.
Erasmus Koney Ali, also known as Asanka, a serving assembly member and presiding member at the local assembly.
Bernard Bediako Baidoo, a lawyer and first-time contender in the constituency’s parliamentary race.
The primary comes in the wake of the passing of the sitting MP, Ernest Kumi, who died six months after the December 2024 general elections. The by-election has been officially scheduled by the Electoral Commission for September 2, 2025.
Party officials and electoral observers are monitoring the process, which is so far reported to be peaceful. The winner of today’s primary will represent the NDC in what is expected to be a closely watched by-election in one of the Eastern Region’s key constituencies.
