Thomas Partey is set to join Villarreal on a free transfer, bringing his four-year Arsenal chapter to a close.
The Ghanaian international has completed his medical and is expected to sign a two-year contract that runs until 2027. The move comes just weeks after his deal with Arsenal officially ended in June.
Partey’s decision to join Villarreal was heavily influenced by the club’s participation in next season’s Champions League. That opportunity to compete at Europe’s highest level was a key factor in finalising the move.
The midfielder’s career now continues under the cloud of serious legal allegations. On July 4, Partey was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. He denies all charges and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on August 5.
The investigation, which began in February 2022, did not prevent Partey from continuing to play for Arsenal. He remained a regular feature under Mikel Arteta throughout the 2024-25 season, making 52 appearances across all competitions.
Partey joined Arsenal in 2020 from Atletico Madrid for €50 million. He brought strength and tactical awareness to the Gunners’ midfield and also filled in at right-back when needed. In total, he featured 167 times for Arsenal, scoring nine goals.
Reports had suggested that Arsenal were open to keeping him for another year. However, negotiations over a new contract did not result in an agreement.
Villarreal will now hope Partey can add steel and experience to their midfield as they prepare for a demanding European campaign. The club sees him as a key figure in their efforts to compete at both domestic and continental levels.
While Villarreal fans will welcome his arrival, his off-pitch legal situation will undoubtedly cast a shadow over his immediate future in Spain.
