Newly appointed Black Queens head coach Kim Björkegren has wasted no time setting his ambitions high. The Swedish tactician is determined to lift Ghana’s standing in women’s football, vowing to push the team up the FIFA rankings and secure long-term success.

Björkegren, 43, officially stepped into the role after signing a two-year deal, replacing Nora Häuptle, who departed for Zambia. Speaking at his unveiling, he made it clear that Ghana has the talent to be a force on the international stage.

“I can see so much talent in this country, so I am really sure that, in the short term, we have the potential to be successful,” he said. “In the long term, I can always guarantee that we will be successful.”

Currently ranked 66th by FIFA, the Black Queens are far from where Björkegren believes they should be. “That’s way too high, to be honest,” he admitted. “With the quality we already have, we should be in a better position.”

The former Apollon Ladies and Racing Louisville manager emphasized his commitment to player development, stating that scouting, monitoring matches, and refining individual skills will be a priority. His first test comes on February 21, when Ghana faces Morocco in a friendly ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in July.

Ghana has been drawn into a challenging Group C alongside South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania. But with Björkegren at the helm, there’s a renewed sense of optimism. As he takes charge, the focus is clear: steady progress, unwavering commitment, and an eventual return to the elite ranks of women’s football.
