MLS issues lifetime ban to Yaw Yeboah and Derrick Jones over betting

Major League Soccer delivered one of the strongest disciplinary decisions in its history on Monday. Former players Yaw Yeboah and Derrick Jones received lifetime bans after an investigation found they engaged in extensive gambling on soccer matches, including games involving their own team. The ruling sends a clear message about the league’s commitment to protecting the integrity of the sport.

The case began quietly in October 2025. MLS received suspicious betting alerts from its integrity monitoring partners and placed both players on administrative leave while an investigation unfolded.

The league hired the law firm Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP to conduct a detailed review. What they uncovered raised serious concerns about gambling activity during the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

According to MLS, both players bet on soccer matches regularly. More troubling was the discovery that they placed bets on their own team while teammates at the Columbus Crew during the 2024 season.

One specific incident stood out. On October 19, 2024, during a match between Columbus and the New York Red Bulls, both players placed a bet that Jones would receive a yellow card.

Jones was booked in the 35th minute for a foul. Investigators later determined that the pair likely shared confidential information about their intent to draw that card.

The league stressed that there was no evidence the gambling influenced the final result of any match. However, the act of betting on events within a game crossed a clear line under MLS policy.

“Major League Soccer remains steadfast in its commitment to match integrity,” commissioner Don Garber said in a statement. “The league will continue to enforce its policies, enhance education efforts, and advocate for the elimination of yellow card wagering in all states to protect the integrity of our competition for clubs, players, and fans.”

For both players, the ruling brings abrupt consequences. Jones, 28, built a steady MLS career after emerging through the Philadelphia Union academy and later playing for Nashville SC, Houston Dynamo, Charlotte FC, and the Columbus Crew.

Yeboah’s journey had a different path. The Accra-born winger came through Ghana’s famed Right to Dream academy and joined Manchester City in 2014 before several loan spells in Europe.

He eventually found stability with the Columbus Crew, where he helped the club win MLS Cup in 2023. His dynamic play at left wingback made him one of the league’s most exciting wide players.

Yeboah later joined LAFC in 2025 before mutually terminating his contract earlier this year. He has since moved to China and recently scored on his debut for Qingdao Hainiu.

The case is not isolated. MLS previously suspended Sporting Kansas City midfielder Felipe Hernandez for betting violations, eventually terminating his contract in 2024.

Across North American sports, leagues have tightened rules since a 2018 Supreme Court ruling allowed legal sports betting in many states. The NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB have all disciplined players in recent years for gambling violations.

For MLS, the message is simple. Talent and success mean little if the credibility of the game is at risk.
