Liverpool have confirmed they will honour the late Diogo Jota’s contract in full, ensuring his family is supported after the striker’s tragic passing in a car accident this summer.

Jota, just 28, died alongside his brother André Silva on July 3, only days after marrying his long-term partner Rute Cardoso. The Portugal forward leaves behind his wife and three young children, and the club’s response has been marked by compassion and solidarity.

Manager Arne Slot revealed that Fenway Sports Group will pay out the final two years of Jota’s deal, which had been due to run until the summer of 2027. Speaking in an interview, Slot praised the decision, stressing that such gestures are rare in football. “Owners are mainly criticised, like managers, but the way they’ve handled this situation by paying his wife and his children all the money from the contract is… maybe people think it’s normal, but it is not in football.”

The reaction has gone beyond the boardroom. Fans created powerful tributes at Anfield and across the city, with flowers, scarves, and messages filling memorial spaces. Slot admitted the scenes moved him deeply. “How many flowers there were, all the memorials, I can almost get emotional thinking about it.”

The Portuguese forward, signed from Wolves in 2020, quickly became a fan favourite for his sharp finishing and tireless work rate. His loss has shaken the club to its core, yet the unity shown by Liverpool’s supporters, players, and ownership highlights the family ethos that defines the Reds.

As Slot reflected, the journey must continue on the pitch, but the memory of Jota will remain woven into Liverpool’s story. For his family, the club’s gesture ensures his legacy lives on with dignity and care.
