Herve Renard has made a shock return as manager of Saudi Arabia’s men’s national team, replacing Roberto Mancini. Renard’s reappointment marks his second stint in charge, having previously led the team from 2019 to 2023.

During his initial tenure, Renard masterminded a stunning 2-1 victory over eventual champions Argentina in the 2022 Qatar World Cup group stage.

The 56-year-old Frenchman left Saudi Arabia to lead France’s women’s team at the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Olympics. However, following Mancini’s departure, Renard has answered the call to return.

“I am back,” Renard announced in a video posted on the Saudi national team’s X account. “I did not intend to leave, but when your country knocks on your door, you have to respond. I did not finish my story with Saudi yet.”

Mancini, who replaced Renard in August 2023, agreed to terminate his contract with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation after a challenging spell.

Renard’s second stint will begin with crucial World Cup qualifiers against Australia and Indonesia in November.
