Guardiola slams ‘bad season’ despite City win over Villa

Manchester City snatched a dramatic 2-1 victory over Aston Villa thanks to Matheus Nunes’ 94th-minute strike but even that wasn’t enough to lift Pep Guardiola’s spirits.

On a tense night at the Etihad, City edged closer to Champions League qualification with a win that sparked wild celebrations. Guardiola pumped his fists and let out a roar as Nunes lashed home from a tight angle following Jérémy Doku’s pinpoint cut-back. It was a goal that could prove pivotal in a congested race for Europe, but the City boss wasn’t letting emotion cloud his wider view.

“This season has been bad,” Guardiola admitted post-match. “The reality is that what makes you feel the season is good is the Premier League, not the Champions League, not FA Cups.”

City’s title defence had already fallen apart well before Christmas, with leaders Liverpool now a distant 18 points ahead. Knocked out of the Champions League in the playoff rounds, Guardiola’s side have watched their domestic dominance fade after years of relentless success. Yet, securing a top-five finish and a 15th consecutive Champions League berth would offer a flicker of redemption.

Bernardo Silva gave City the lead in the first half, only for Villa to claw back through a Marcus Rashford penalty. But Nunes’ late heroics ensured Guardiola’s side leapfrogged Forest and Newcastle into third on 61 points, though they’ve played a game more than their rivals.

Villa, who returned to Europe’s top table this season after a 41-year absence, saw their momentum checked. “We will have chances to get the Champions League,” said Unai Emery. “I am happy how we are reacting.”

With just four points separating third from seventh, the pressure is immense. But City know that four wins from four will guarantee European football and perhaps offer Guardiola a sliver of satisfaction in a campaign he’s desperate to forget.
