The football world is mourning the loss of Ecuador international Marco Angulo, who died on Monday night at the age of 22, just over a month after being seriously injured in a car crash.
Angulo was involved in a fatal car accident on October 7 in Quito, Ecuador. He underwent multiple operations and spent over a week in intensive care before succumbing to his injuries.
LDU Quito, Angulo’s club, expressed their deepest condolences, saying: “His passing is an irreparable loss which will leave an indelible mark in our hearts.”
The Ecuadorian Football Association also paid tribute: “Marco was not only an outstanding player but also a great team-mate. He leaves a deep sorrow in our hearts… Rest in peace, Angulito.”
The midfielder made his debut for Ecuador in November 2022 and earned three caps for his country. He joined LDU Quito on loan from MLS club FC Cincinnati in March and made 16 appearances for the club.
Ecuadorian reports confirm that Independiente del Valle footballer Roberto Cabezas and a friend, Victor Carcopa, also lost their lives in the accident. The condition of the two other passengers remains unknown.
