Thomas Partey’s Arsenal journey looked to be winding down but a resurgence in Mikel Arteta’s plans has reopened the door for a contract extension.

The 31-year-old midfielder is now in discussions with the club about a new deal, with his current contract set to expire this summer. Once seen as a likely departure, Partey’s influence since returning from injury has shifted sentiment inside the Emirates. Both club and player are reportedly aligned on the desire to continue the partnership.

Partey is open to a two-year deal or a one-year extension with the option of a further 12 months. His family is settled in London, and he remains happy at the club he joined from Atlético Madrid in 2020. While negotiations are ongoing, he’s also keeping his options open should talks stall.

Despite a frustrating run of injuries, Partey has been instrumental in Arsenal’s midfield when fit, helping steady the tempo and shield the defence. His return to form couldn’t have come at a better time, with Arsenal pushing on multiple fronts. However, he will miss the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain, though he’s expected back for the decisive second leg on May 7.

For Arteta, keeping Partey may prove pivotal not just for experience, but for the balance he brings to a youthful, energetic side.
