Organizers of the Ghana Fintech Awards have launched the Women in FinTech program to empower women and support the creation of women-led fintech companies in Ghana.

The initiative was launched at the Ghana Fintech Awards 2023, which took place over the weekend.

Ghana FinTech Awards is an annual event aimed at identifying Financial Technology (FinTech) Companies and Banking Institution’s stalwarts and celebrating their successes throughout the year.

According to the organizers, the program is aimed at addressing the gender disparity and cultivating women leaders in Ghana’s financial technology sector.

“This will be achieved through a comprehensive array of events and projects tailored to offer education, exposure and mentorship in a conducive learning environment, equipped with resources for fintech developments,” said the president of Arkel Consult and Management Services Ltd, Cristina Swan-Awaga.

With the aim of aligning with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal five (5), the target and approach of the Women in Fintech initiative include empowering through education, promoting female leadership, increasing fintech literacy through mentorship, business incubators, online and in-person training sessions etc.

Speaking at the launch, President of Women in Fintech Ghana, Dorcas Sarkodie-Ekuban said “Traditionally, women have been underrepresented in the financial sector and similarly face the issue of being outnumbered in technology-driven fields.”

She added that “this gap, a product of societal processes has hindered women’s integration into technology and impeding our advancement”.

She therefore called on relevant stakeholders to collaborate in breaking the gender barriers in the financial sector.
