Serhou Guirassy netted a hat-trick, but Borussia Dortmund still fell short as their 3-1 victory over Barcelona wasn’t enough to overturn a heavy first-leg deficit, resulting in a 5-3 aggregate defeat in the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Having been dismantled 4-0 in the first leg, Dortmund came out aggressively, pressing Barcelona from the opening whistle and throwing the visitors off-balance.

Guirassy, who missed opportunities in the first leg, was denied early in Tuesday’s clash as well but confidently converted a penalty in the 11th minute after Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny fouled Pascal Gross.

He then doubled Dortmund’s lead with a well-timed header in the 49th minute.

However, an own goal by Ramy Bensebaini complicated Dortmund’s mission, and although Guirassy completed his hat trick with a powerful close-range finish in the 76th minute, becoming the Champions League’s top scorer this season with 13 goals.

Barcelona withstood the pressure and secured their place in the semifinals, where they will face either Inter Milan or Bayern Munich.
