Former U.S. President Joe Biden, aged 82, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, according to a statement released by his office on Sunday. The diagnosis followed medical evaluations prompted by urinary symptoms, leading to the discovery of a prostate nodule. Subsequent tests confirmed a Gleason score of 9, indicating a high-grade malignancy with rapid growth potential .
Despite the severity of the diagnosis, the cancer is reported to be hormone-sensitive, which opens avenues for effective management through hormone therapy. Biden and his family are currently consulting with medical professionals to determine the most appropriate treatment plan .
The news has elicited a wave of bipartisan support. President Donald Trump expressed his well-wishes on his social media platform, stating, “Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery” . Vice President Kamala Harris also offered her support, describing Biden as “a fighter” and expressing confidence in his resilience .
Biden’s diagnosis adds to his personal history with cancer; he lost his son, Beau Biden, to brain cancer in 2015. During his presidency, Biden prioritized cancer research initiatives, notably the Cancer Moonshot program, aiming to accelerate progress in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment .
As the former president navigates this health challenge, the world watches with hope for his recovery.
