Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has announced that the Tema-Mpakadan Railway line will officially open for use on October 1.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series press briefing at the Jubilee House, Mr. Nikpe confirmed that the train, which was involved in an accident during a test drive in 2024, has since been repaired. A fresh test run was conducted on September 16, 2025, he disclosed.

The Minister explained that the 97-kilometre railway line, linking Tema Port to Mpakadan as part of a multimodal transport system with Buipe Port via the Volta Lake, is now complete. However, he cautioned that the viability of the project relies heavily on freight services and further investment in port facilities to support the transfer of cargo.

Touching on the Western Railway Line, which runs from Takoradi to Kumasi, Mr. Nikpe noted that construction works on sections of the project stalled in December 2024 due to unpaid certificates. He, however, confirmed that Amandi Construction has since returned to site.

The Minister also announced measures to clear encroachers from railway lands and pledged that the government is working with the Ministry of Finance to find sustainable solutions to pay staff salaries at the Ghana Railway Company, which has been struggling with revenue shortfalls.
