The Bright Future Alliance (TBFA) has publicly endorsed the Government of Ghana’s consideration of renaming Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport, describing the move as a significant step toward democratic consolidation, historical accuracy, and Pan-African renewal.

In a detailed statement signed by its Executive Director, Bright Ofori, TBFA argued that the proposed renaming goes beyond symbolism, framing it as a moral and constitutional obligation.

According to the group, national monuments and public institutions reflect a country’s values, and airports in particular serve as Ghana’s “first handshake with the world.”

TBFA situates the proposed change within a broader continental trend, noting that African nations are increasingly reassessing colonial legacies, military interventions and distorted historical narratives.

The group says Ghana’s move aligns with this Pan-African awakening, emphasizing identity, dignity and respect for constitutional governance.

Central to TBFA’s argument is the claim that retaining the name Kotoka International Airport contradicts Ghana’s democratic foundations. Emmanuel K. Kotoka was a leading figure in the 1966 military coup that overthrew Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

TBFA maintains that honoring individuals associated with unconstitutional changes of government undermines the principles enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.

“Continuing to immortalize individuals linked to coups sends the wrong signals to citizens and security services alike,” the statement said, warning that it risks normalizing the subversion of democratic rule.

TBFA further argued that Kotoka’s association with the airport was largely circumstantial, as he died at the site where the airport is located, rather than due to any transformational national development legacy.

TBFA expressed full support for the proposed name Accra International Airport, describing it as unifying, inclusive, and reflective of Ghana’s capital as the nation’s political, economic and cultural hub. According to the group, the name places national identity above individuals and strengthens collective ownership of a key national asset.

TBFA concluded that the proposed renaming demonstrates political maturity and moral leadership, sending a strong message across Africa that the era of glorifying unconstitutional takeovers is ending.

The Alliance pledged its continued advocacy for governance rooted in democratic values, historical integrity and Pan-African progress.
