The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Jinapor, has emphasized the need for Ghana to strategically position itself to capitalize on the rapidly evolving mining industry.
He highlighted the importance of developing innovative approaches that promote sustainable mining practices, protect the environment, and contribute to national development.
Speaking at the 8th Biennial International Mining and Mineral Conference, hosted by the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) on Thursday, August 1st, 2024, under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Prof. Richard Amankwah, the Minister stressed that leveraging innovation is key to maximizing efficiency, reducing waste, and fostering a knowledge-driven mining sector.
Mr. Jinapor further noted that technology is essential for addressing the historical environmental and social challenges associated with mining, promoting energy efficiency, and building a circular economy.
He emphasized that through innovation, Ghana can enhance production and add value to its mineral resources.
The Minister commended the Conference as a unique platform for stakeholders to explore critical issues within the mining industry, particularly the role of technology and innovation in creating a green, sustainable, and safe mining industry.
He urged industry players and academia to assess past and current mining practices in light of the future industry they aim to build.
He called for expanding research and developing affordable, innovative technologies to support green and sustainable mining and mineral processing.
Addressing the topic of “Critical Minerals: Ghana’s Preparedness for Value Addition,” he underscored the importance of this issue, given the vital role critical minerals play in the transition to green energy.
