Ghana’s Parliament will begin extended sittings from Monday, July 7, 2025, as the House steps up efforts to address critical legislative business before its scheduled adjournment.

Presenting the Business Statement for the seventh week of the session, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga announced that Parliament will now convene on Mondays and Saturdays in addition to regular sitting days.

The move is aimed at accelerating the passage of Legislative Instruments (LIs) that must mature before the session concludes.

Ayariga, who also chairs Parliament’s Business Committee, highlighted that the upcoming week would be particularly intensive. A total of 55 ministers and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, are expected to appear before the House to respond to parliamentary questions.

He further indicated that in line with Standing Order 160, urgent bills may be introduced and expedited through all necessary legislative stages within a single sitting.

Busy Week Ahead for Lawmakers

Apart from ministerial questioning, the House could also witness the laying of new papers, the presentation of committee reports, and debates on various motions.

“Motions may be debated and, where applicable, their accompanying resolutions adopted,” Ayariga said. “Pursuant to Standing Order 216(2), and subject to Standing Order 67, the Committee outlines the sequence in which parliamentary business shall proceed.”

The fast-paced legislative agenda reflects Parliament’s commitment to finalizing outstanding items before the break.

Minority Demanded Briefing by Electoral Commission

During discussions on the Business Statement, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin called on the Majority Leader to extend an invitation to Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), to brief the House.

The request relates to the EC’s decision to conduct a rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency
