Parliament will return from recess next Tuesday, September 29, following a directive from Speaker Alban Bagbin for the House to hold an emergency sitting.
The House is expected to meet at noon at Parliament House in Accra.
A notice from the Speaker’s Office dated Thursday, September 24, said the recall was made under Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution and Order 53 of Parliament’s Standing Orders.
The notice did not indicate the specific business for which MPs are being recalled.
However, the decision comes against the backdrop of growing parliamentary concern over a number of large cocaine seizures involving consignments traced to Ghana.
The Minority had asked the Speaker to convene the House to examine what it describes as urgent national security concerns arising from the seizures.
The caucus wants Parliament to investigate the systems used to inspect, process and clear cargo at Ghana’s ports, as well as the roles played by customs, intelligence and narcotics enforcement agencies.
It has also called for officials from key institutions, including the Narcotics Control Commission, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Ghana Revenue Authority and National Intelligence Bureau, to answer questions before the House.
The Minority has referenced several seizures recorded since 2025, including the interception of more than 3.3 tonnes of cocaine at Pedu Junction in March 2025.
It has also pointed to the seizure of almost 3.9 tonnes of cocaine at the Port of Dunkirk in France from a container that originated from Ghana.
According to the Minority, the seizures involved consignments worth more than one billion US dollars combined.
The push for a recall has generated differing views within the Majority, with some MPs questioning whether Parliament should reconvene while investigations by the relevant agencies are still underway.
The Speaker’s latest notice, however, confirms that the House will sit on September 29, with the specific agenda expected to be determined ahead of the emergency sitting.
