Parliament has approved the abolition of the COVID-19 levy, a tax measure introduced under the Akufo-Addo administration to support pandemic-related spending. T
he repeal follows the Finance Minister’s announcement in the 2026 Budget, signaling the government’s intention to ease financial pressures on citizens.
According to the government, removing the levy is expected to boost household incomes, support businesses, and contribute to broader economic transformation efforts.
During the debate on the motion, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin welcomed the repeal but pressed the government to provide further tax relief.
He urged authorities to “go further” by scrapping the One Ghana Cedi levy on petroleum products and the 18 percent electricity tariff, which he described as nuisance taxes.
