The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is expected to stage a protest at the office of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) today, Monday, July 13, following the arrest of the aid to the flagbearer of the NPP and aspiring National Communicator, Dennis Miracles Aboagye.

The party says the protest is intended to demand the release and an explanation for the circumstances under which Mr. Aboagye was arrested, insisting that the action did not follow the appropriate legal process.

According to the NPP, Mr Aboagye was picked up at the Accra International Airport by officers of EOCO with the support of the Ghana Immigration Service. The party argues that he had not received any official invitation, caution statement or notification that he was the subject of an investigation before his arrest.

Speaking to Accra based Citi FM, the National Organizer of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, says the party considers the arrest unacceptable and believes it sends the wrong signal about the treatment of opposition politicians.
He said Mr Aboagye had not been informed of any offence or questioned by EOCO before his arrest.

“Miracles has not received any invitation from EOCO. He has not been informed of any wrongdoing. He has not been told that he is under any form of investigation,” he stated.

While reaffirming the party’s support for lawful investigations, he stressed that every investigation must be conducted within the bounds of the law. He cautioned against the use of state institutions in ways that could be seen as targeting political opponents.

The NPP says its members will march to EOCO to demand answers and to register their displeasure over what they describe as a breach of due process.
