NPP reaffirms boycott of Ablekuma North rerun despite court ruling

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reaffirmed its decision to boycott the Electoral Commission’s planned rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency, set for Friday, July 11, 2025.

This follows a High Court ruling on July 9 by Justice Ali Baba Abature, who dismissed an injunction application filed by the NPP’s 2024 parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie.

The court described the application as “unmeritorious” and emphasized that stopping the rerun would hinder the Electoral Commission’s constitutional duties and deny constituents parliamentary representation.

The NPP argues that the rerun contradicts a prior court order from January 4, 2025, which directed the collation and declaration of results from 62 polling stations. Party lawyers contend that only three polling stations remained uncollated as of January 27.

“We believe we won the election. We will not contest a rerun for an election we have already won,” said NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed.

He added that the party will explore all legal options and respect the court’s final ruling.

Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has assured its commitment to peace and security during the rerun.
