NPP MPs are no longer considered micro minority but minuscule – Majority Leader lashes Minority

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga took a playful swipe at the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament on Tuesday, following the swearing-in of new Members of Parliament for Akwatia and Tamale Central.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mr. Ayariga noted that the recent by-elections in Akwatia, Tamale Central, and Ablekuma have now completed the full composition of the House — but not without consequences for the NPP’s numbers.

“The independent members of this House remain four. The NPP, which previously had a micro minority of 88, has seen its number shrink further to 87,” he said — drawing laughter from MPs across the chamber.

With a touch of humour, Ayariga went further to say:

“Mr. Speaker, I believe they are no longer a micro minority, but a minuscule minority. ‘Micro’ could actually mean a large number in scientific terms — one million can be micro when you’re dealing with a billion. But in plain English, when you want to describe something very small, you say minuscule.

The Majority Leader then turned his focus to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), boasting of the governing party’s increasing numerical strength. He explained that with the backing of the four independent MPs, the NDC now enjoys what he called a “super majority.”

“The NDC super majority will balloon to 185 when we add our numbers to the four independents who have agreed to do business with us,” he said, smiling.
“The NDC will become a gargantuan majority. All I can say is, Mr. Speaker, so far, so excellent.”

The remarks, while humorous, underscore the shifting parliamentary dynamics following the latest round of by-elections, with implications for legislative business in the months ahead.
