Barely 24 hours till the Electoral Commission (EC) opens polls in 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially resumed campaigning in the Ablekuma North Constituency ahead of the parliamentary rerun scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.
This follows a reversal of its earlier decision to boycott the process.
The rerun, ordered by the Electoral Commission (EC), involves 19 polling stations and stems from unresolved disputes surrounding the December 2024 general elections.
The EC cited concerns over the credibility of results from those stations as grounds for the partial rerun.
The NPP had initially rejected the EC’s directive, asserting that its candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, had legitimately won the parliamentary seat. However, the party’s position shifted after the Accra High Court dismissed an injunction application filed by Afriyie on July 9, clearing the way for the rerun to proceed.
At a press briefing on July 8, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong reaffirmed the party’s confidence in its candidate’s victory.
“For us in the New Patriotic Party, we are resolute and we know that our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the elections with a margin of 414 votes. This is based on facts and figures,” Frimpong said.
He added that the party’s National Executive Committee remains undeterred by the ongoing controversy and is committed to defending its electoral mandate.
“We are not going to be intimidated,” he asserted.
According to reports, there has been a a surge in NPP campaign activities, with hundreds of supporters actively canvassing across the affected polling areas. Some supporters expressed renewed confidence in the process, noting that Afriyie’s image remains on the ballot, reinforcing their decision to participate.
The rerun is expected to be closely contested, following months of political tension and legal battles. Electoral officials and security agencies have indicated readiness to ensure a smooth and peaceful process on Friday.
