The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially conceded defeat in the Akwatia by-election, describing the outcome as a reflection of the people’s will.
According to certified results from the Electoral Commission, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Baidoo Bediako, secured a decisive victory with 18,199 votes.
His closest contender, the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu, received 15,235 votes. The Liberal Party of Ghana’s (LPG) candidate, Owusu Patrick, came in a distant third with just 82 votes. In total, 33,819 valid votes were recorded, alongside 303 rejected ballots.
Eastern Regional Secretary of the NPP, Tony Osei-Adjei, expressed disappointment over the loss but emphasized that the party accepts the outcome.
“We’re obviously disappointed because this wasn’t the result we anticipated. However, the constituents have made their choice, and we respect that,” Osei-Adjei said.
He also paid tribute to the late Ernest Kumi, the former NPP Member of Parliament for Akwatia, reflecting on his dedication to the constituency.
“To some degree, we feel we let him down. He gave his all for Akwatia, even up until his death. He worked tirelessly to reclaim the seat and restore his dignity in the eyes of his people,” he noted.
Osei-Adjei also recalled the legal battles Kumi faced before his passing, referencing a Supreme Court ruling and pending proceedings at the Koforidua High Court at the time.
