President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that Ghana will soon elect its first female President, pointing to the country’s steady progress in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Speaking at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing, China, on Monday, October 13, President Mahama noted that Ghana has taken concrete steps to mainstream gender in all national development strategies.

“As the African Union Champion for Gender and Women’s Empowerment, I am proud to say that Ghana remains steadfast in its pursuit of equality for all,” he stated.

The President highlighted key milestones in women’s leadership, including the election of Ghana’s first female Vice President and the appointment of women to top positions across government institutions, the judiciary, and the security services.

“These are not symbolic gestures; they are a deliberate affirmation that women deserve a seat at the highest levels of decision-making,” Mahama said. “And I am confident that, in the very near future, our women will break the glass ceiling and that a woman will be President of the Republic of Ghana.”

President Mahama also emphasized progress in girls’ education, noting that Ghana has achieved gender parity in school enrollment, with more girls completing basic and secondary education than ever before.

He cited reforms and investments in institutions supporting women’s rights, including the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), the Domestic Violence Secretariat, and Specialised Domestic Violence Courts.

“These institutions have been strengthened through sustained budgetary allocations, enhancing their capacity to provide justice, protection, and social support to survivors of gender-based violence,” he added.

Mahama concluded his remarks by urging global leaders and international partners to commit to bold, transformative actions that accelerate gender equality and empower women worldwide.
