Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has assured the people of Bawku that the government will rebuild the Bawku Naba statue, which was destroyed over the weekend in an act he described as both “regrettable and unacceptable.”
In a statement posted on Facebook following a durbar at Burma Camp, Dr. Boamah expressed strong condemnation of the destruction of the monument, which he said holds deep traditional and symbolic value for the Bawku community.
“I condemned the destruction of the cherished statue in Bawku over the weekend,” the Minister wrote. “I assured that the government shall rebuild the statue and expects appropriate sanctions to be meted out to the perpetrators.”
He added that efforts are already underway to reconstruct the statue and restore its significance to the community. The Defence Ministry, he noted, is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to support security operations in the area to maintain peace and ensure accountability.
Dr. Boamah also expressed concern over recent violence in the municipality, particularly the shooting of two soldiers, which he described as a deeply troubling escalation.
“The Ghana Armed Forces remain committed to protecting lives and maintaining order in every part of the country,” he stated, calling for swift justice in the matter.
He further appealed to all stakeholders—traditional authorities, the military, and local residents—to work together to restore calm, dignity, and mutual respect in Bawku.
“Let us unite to uphold peace, protect tradition, and strengthen the bonds that hold our nation together,” he said.
The Defence Minister’s remarks come amid heightened tensions in Bawku, a region that has seen sporadic conflict in recent years. Government officials and security agencies continue to appeal for calm as investigations and peacebuilding efforts intensify.
