President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will begin settling debts owed to road contractors starting this month, a move aimed at reviving stalled infrastructure projects across the country.
Speaking during a meeting with the Council of State at the Jubilee House on Monday, the President confirmed that the Ministry of Finance has earmarked funds to begin paying contractors who have long awaited disbursements for completed and ongoing works.
“I’m sure that some of the contractors who have been working on your projects will be paid so that they can go back on site and continue their work,” President Mahama said.
The President explained that the payments form part of the government’s broader strategy to accelerate infrastructure development and support economic recovery efforts. According to him, the Finance Minister is prioritising these disbursements to fast-track the completion of critical road and transport projects that have stalled due to funding constraints.
Mid Year budget to provide more details
President Mahama noted that the scope and structure of the planned payments will be detailed in the upcoming mid-year budget review, which will provide a comprehensive update on the country’s economic performance during the first half of 2025.
“We will present the mid-year review shortly, and after that, we will come back to engage you [the Council of State] to discuss our performance and where we’re headed,” he assured the Council.
