Former Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, K.T. Hammond, has issued a strong warning that Ghanaians will face severe hardship if former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is not elected President in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking during Dr. Bawumia’s campaign tour of the Ashanti Region, Mr. Hammond expressed unwavering confidence in the NPP flagbearer hopeful, describing him as a capable and hardworking leader with the competence to transform the country if given the mandate.
“Have you monitored Bawumia’s capabilities and hard work? It’s madness to say Bawumia is a Muslim, so he can’t be a President,” Mr. Hammond said. “We will suffer if Bawumia is not elected as President.”
He condemned what he called “irrational” criticisms against Dr. Bawumia based on his religion, urging Ghanaians to focus on competence, dedication, and integrity rather than religious identity when choosing national leaders.
Mr. Hammond also used the platform to call for unity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the party prepares for its presidential primaries in January 2026. He expressed concern over growing internal divisions, fuelled by class-based discrimination and the marginalisation of grassroots members.
“Where were the rich people when we were struggling to get money to establish the NPP in the 1990s?” he asked. “Some of us who supported the party don’t brag. We fought for this party with our blood and sweat.”
He criticised what he described as the widening gap between wealthy and less affluent members of the party, cautioning that such attitudes threaten party cohesion.
“This behaviour of the rich distancing themselves from the poor must cease. The innuendos must cease, and disunity must stop,” he urged.
Mr. Hammond concluded by emphasising that unity and discipline will be key to securing victory in the next general elections, and called on all party faithful to put personal ambitions aside for the greater good of the NPP.
