The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, citing “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace.”
In a statement released on Monday, September 8, police authorities indicated that Abronye, the outspoken Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was taken into custody earlier in the day and is currently being held. He is expected to be arraigned before a court in the coming days.
Although the Police did not disclose the specific actions that led to his arrest, the development comes amid heightened political tension and growing scrutiny surrounding Abronye’s recent activities.
Abronye has made headlines in recent weeks after submitting formal requests for political asylum in eight countries — including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, Germany, and Côte d’Ivoire. In his applications, he claimed to be a target of political persecution, alleging threats to his life and accusing the current administration of weaponizing state security agencies against perceived opponents.
As part of ongoing investigations, police reportedly conducted a search at the residence of former NPP Youth Organiser Moses Abor on Sunday, but Abronye was not found at the time.
His arrest has sparked renewed debate over political freedoms, law enforcement conduct, and internal divisions within the New Patriotic Party.
