Renowned sports broadcaster Dan Kweku Yeboah has opened up about his journey into journalism and his love for sports, revealing how childhood dreams, family expectation and raw talent shaped his career path.
Speaking on the AM CLUB show with Kojo Daasebre on MX24 TV, the seasoned journalist recalled that his passion for journalism and sports was evident from a young age.
However, his father strongly opposed the idea of him becoming a journalist, steering him instead toward Agriculture Science in senior high school.
“My dad didn’t like the idea of me pursuing journalism, even though he was a sports enthusiast himself,” he shared. “But deep down, I knew journalism was what I really wanted” he added.
After losing his father, Yeboah made a firm decision to follow his true passion. Post-SHS, he shifted focus entirely to journalism. His journey took shape practically at the University of Cape Coast, where he began honing his skills and building a career that would eventually make him one of Ghana’s most recognisable sports voices.
He emphasized the need for structural investment in local sports, especially football.
“We have to make a conscious effort to invest in our football game,” he said, stressing the importance of long-term planning and infrastructure to revive the nation’s sporting standards.
Aside being a sports commentator and journalist, Yeboah also shared his flair for comedy, which has become a signature part of his radio presence, especially during his sports presentations on Peace FM’s morning show with Kwami Sefa Kayi.
“I never thought of becoming a comedian. It’s just a God-given talent,” he said. “I started adding a bit of humour to lighten the mood before the main sports analysis. The feedback was amazing—people enjoyed it, and that encouraged me to keep going.”
He pointed out, however, that Ghana’s comedy industry still lags behind, particularly when compared to Nigeria’s.
“Comedy in Ghana is not as developed as that of Nigeria,” Yeboah noted. “The key difference is investment. Comedy, like music, is a creative industry. If we invest properly, we can take it to greater heights and even attract investors just like we see in the music scene.”
