The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has confirmed the arrest of four suspects in connection with a robbery at Ohwim Tigo Junction in Kumasi, which resulted in the death of one person.
The incident occurred on February 10, when the victim, Andrews Amankwa, was shot and his Toyota Hilux stolen. He later died at the hospital where he was receiving treatment.
Police investigations led to the first arrest on February 18, when Akwasi Manu was apprehended in possession of a mobile phone belonging to the deceased. Manu was arraigned before the Asokwa Circuit Court II on February 20 for possession of stolen property and remanded to reappear on March 5.
Further intelligence-led operations resulted in the arrest of Bashiru Tanko at Atonsu High School Junction on February 19. Two additional suspects, Kojo Amponsah and Emmanuel Kwame Appiah, were arrested on February 21 and 22 at Hwireso near Buokrom and the Danyame Soldier Barracks in Kumasi, respectively.
One suspect, Eric Antwi Doku, who sustained gunshot wounds during a police operation, later died from his injuries.
“Suspect Eric Acheampong Adu, who sustained gunshot wounds during the operation, has passed on. Our investigation further established that this criminal syndicate, led by the deceased suspect, specialised in the snatching of pickup and Land Cruiser vehicles,” the IGP said.
Police investigations into the robbery and the activities of the syndicate are ongoing.
