The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a strong warning to customers to be vigilant against fraudsters who are impersonating ECG officials and demanding mobile money payments for services such as meter installation, replacement, and debt cancellation.
This caution follows a growing number of complaints from customers who have received suspicious calls from unknown individuals demanding payment for ECG-related services through mobile money platforms.
In a statement, Ing. George Amoah, General Manager of ECG in the Ashanti Region, made it clear that ECG does not operate any mobile money account, and any request for mobile money payments should be treated as fraudulent.
“They [fraudsters] reach out to customers via social media or phone calls and ask for payments to specific mobile money numbers. They often impersonate ECG staff, including District Managers or Technical Officers,” Ing. Amoah stated.
He cited a recent case in which a customer, after applying for a meter, was contacted and tricked into paying ₵900, followed by an additional ₵500 to the mobile number 0508058638. The customer became suspicious and reported the incident after the fraudsters stopped responding. In another instance at Breman, an elderly man was duped of ₵2,000.
Fraudulent activities have been reported in Adum, Kokoben, Suame, Danyame, Abuakwa, and Ahinsan districts, with suspected scam numbers including: 0531807230, 0508790801, 0543803302, and 0532752541.
