CJ a Victim of Political Witch Hunt — Ibrahim Gomna Alleges

Political commentator Ibrahim Gomna has alleged that the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is politically motivated, describing it as a clear case of “witch hunting” driven by dissatisfaction within the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking during the News Review Segmemt on The AMclub, Gomna claimed that the current situation surrounding the Chief Justice is less about legal concerns and more about political vendettas.

“The CJ is a victim of political witch hunting. What is going on has to do with the dissatisfaction of the CJ by the NDC,” he stated.

Gomna’s comments add to a growing national debate over the suspension, which has sparked reactions from legal experts, civil society groups, and professional bodies such as the Ghana Bar Association, which has already called for a review of the decision.

Critics argue that the move threatens judicial independence and could undermine public trust in the judiciary.

Meanwhile, the government has firmly denied allegations that political motives are behind the ongoing impeachment proceedings against suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, following claims by legal and political figures suggesting bias in the process.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, dismissed the accusations as “baseless and unfounded,” asserting that the process is being handled strictly within the boundaries of Ghanaian law.

“It does not matter how sensitive your position — once Ghanaian law dictates that certain processes must be taken in respect of alleged misconduct, the rules must come into play,” he stated. “That is the only guiding principle President Mahama has operated by in all of this.”

Kwakye Ofosu was responding to allegations made earlier by the suspended Chief Justice herself, who, in a public statement, claimed that the disciplinary process violated natural justice and procedural fairness, particularly due to restrictions placed on her legal team and family from attending the closed proceedings.

But the Minister insisted that the process is non-political and fully constitutional, adding that attempts to link the presidency to political interference are not supported by evidence.
“Any claim, reference, or imputation of a political motive to the President in respect of these processes is unfounded, false, and cannot be allowed to stand,” he said.
