As the Akwatia by-election approaches, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has urged voters to support the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Bernard Boidoo Bediako.

Speaking to party supporters on Sunday, August 31, Mr. Debrah delivered a personal message from President John Dramani Mahama, urging constituents to back Bediako at the polls.

“John Mahama says I should tell you, the people of Akwatia, that he wants to work with the NDC candidate Bernard Bediako in his government,” he announced.

Mr. Debrah emphasized that electing Bediako would strengthen the collaboration between Akwatia and the central government, especially in driving development projects within the constituency.

The by-election, scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, follows the sudden death of sitting MP Ernest Yaw Kumi, and has sparked intense competition between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which is fielding Solomon Kwame Asumadu as its candidate.

Momentum appears to be building behind the NDC’s candidate, as two independent opinion polls have placed Bediako in the lead.

A Sanity Africa survey, conducted between August 1 and 27, gives Bediako 52.3%, with Asumadu trailing at 47.7% — a slim but significant 4.6-point lead. A second poll by Global Info Analytics also tips Bediako to win, projecting 53% support compared to Asumadu’s 47%.

With just hours to the vote, both parties have intensified their campaigns, but the NDC is banking on the President’s endorsement and a well-organized grassroots effort to push Bediako over the finish line.
