The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, could be released from custody today, Monday, June 2, 2025, if ongoing efforts by his legal team successfully address the delays surrounding his bail.

Chairman Wontumi has been held by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for the past five days as investigations continue into allegations of financial misconduct, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

He was granted bail on May 28, 2025, set at GHC50 million with two justified sureties. Despite reportedly meeting the bail conditions by May 30, administrative and legal challenges have so far prevented his release.

One of his lawyers, Andy Appiah-Kubi, remains hopeful that the issues will be resolved soon, stating, “We encountered some difficulties which will be sorted on Monday, then we will have a fresh slate to operate, and work towards the desired result.”

The legal team is expected to take the necessary steps today to ensure that Chairman Wontumi’s bail finally takes effect, paving the way for his release from EOCO custody.
