Former Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor has made a passionate appeal to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to improve the standard of the Ghana Premier League.
Following a tumultuous 2023/24 season marred by fan protests, poor officiating, and a tragic incident that claimed the life of a fan, Akonnor is urging for urgent reforms.
Ahead of the 2024/25 season, Akonnor emphasized the need for integrity and professionalism in the league. “It has to be better. We can do better,” he stressed in a recent interview.
“We’ve come a long way, and if we have it dealing with other professionals, where will be our next generation of players?”
Akonnor highlighted the importance of the local league in developing Ghanaian talent, noting that “it’s always from our local league, so we need to improve that aspect.”
He specifically pointed out issues such as time-wasting tactics when a team is leading, calling for better management of the game.
With the Ghana Premier League facing challenges, Akonnor’s appeal serves as a wake-up call for the GFA to prioritize reforms and restore the league’s integrity.
As the football fraternity looks forward to the new season, the question remains: will the GFA heed Akonnor’s call and take decisive action to elevate the Ghana Premier League?
