The Ghana women’s national football team, the Black Queens, are set to ramp up preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with three international friendly matches against Malawi, Botswana, and long-time rivals Nigeria.

The fixtures form part of head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s broader strategy to fine-tune the squad’s tactical setup.

This will foster team chemistry and enhance match fitness ahead of the continental showpiece, which kicks off in July in Morocco.

Ghana will begin their friendly series with a match against Malawi on Friday, June 21, at the Ziaida Complex in Benslimane.

The team will remain at the same venue to take on Botswana four days later, on Tuesday, June 25.

The final and most anticipated encounter will be against Nigeria on Saturday, June 29, at the Lanouria Complex.

“We want to test ourselves against different playing styles and team dynamics,” said Bjorkegren.

“Malawi and Botswana provide technical and disciplined opposition, while Nigeria offers the challenge of a traditional powerhouse.”

The Black Queens have been drawn in Group C of WAFCON 2024 and will open their campaign on July 7 against defending champions South Africa.

With Morocco hosting the month-long tournament, Ghana aims to make a deep run and possibly clinch their first WAFCON title.

The upcoming friendlies are expected to provide valuable insights into the team’s readiness as they gear up for one of Africa’s most prestigious women’s football competitions.
