The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has led a high-level delegation to the United Kingdom as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations through sports and democratic engagement.

The visit, which took place on March 14, 2026, included representatives from Primeval Media Limited, organisers of the Democracy Cup, who held discussions with Sunderland A.F.C..

The talks centred on building a partnership between Ghana’s Parliament and the English club, with the aim of promoting the country’s democratic credentials while highlighting its investment, tourism and cultural opportunities through football diplomacy.

As part of the engagement, Sunderland A.F.C. indicated its willingness to host the winner of Ghana’s 2026 Parliamentary Democracy Cup later this year. The club also expressed interest in working with Ghana on initiatives to boost tourism.

The delegation, which included officials from the Ghana High Commission in the United Kingdom, toured the Stadium of Light and watched a match between Sunderland A.F.C. and Brighton & Hove Albion F.C..

The visit highlights the increasing role of sports diplomacy in promoting Ghana’s democratic image and strengthening international partnerships, particularly with long-standing partners such as the United Kingdom.
