Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has formally referred the nomination of Supreme Court Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the next Chief Justice of Ghana to Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting.
The move follows President John Dramani Mahama’s announcement on September 23, nominating Justice Baffoe-Bonnie in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution. The nomination comes in the wake of the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, October 21, the Speaker confirmed that formal communication had been received from the Presidency and that the nomination had been duly forwarded to the Appointments Committee, in line with parliamentary procedures.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is a seasoned jurist with decades of experience on the bench, having served at the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and currently at the Supreme Court.
The Presidency described him as a judge of “unwavering commitment to justice” and praised his “invaluable contributions to Ghanaian jurisprudence,” adding that he is well qualified to lead the judiciary at the highest level.
The Appointments Committee is expected to announce a public vetting date soon. If approved by Parliament, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will officially succeed Justice Torkornoo as Ghana’s next Chief Justice.
