Police have arrested an individual for allegedly tearing down campaign posters of a candidate at a polling station in Akwatia during today’s by-election.

According to authorities, the swift intervention prevented any disruption to the voting process. Security officials on the ground have warned that any attempts to interfere with the electoral process — including acts of vandalism, intimidation, or violence — will be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law.

The by-election was triggered by the passing of the incumbent Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, creating a vacancy in the Akwatia constituency.

Over 50,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in what has become a tightly contested race between Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Both major parties have mounted intense campaigns in recent weeks, with high-profile endorsements and visits from national party executives aiming to galvanize support in the constituency.

To ensure a peaceful electoral process, the Ghana Police Service has deployed more than 5,500 officers across Akwatia. The Electoral Commission has also reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a free, fair, and transparent election.

Residents have been urged to vote peacefully, respect electoral rules, and report any irregularities to the appropriate authorities.

Voting is ongoing across polling centres, with no major incidents reported aside from the isolated arrest earlier in the day.
