Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson says protesters of Tuesday’s #OccupyBoGProtest are yet to know where the security zone touted by the police ends and begins.
As a result, he told the media, at the start of the demonstration against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana that they will march into the offices of the Central Bank to deliver their petition.
“We informed the police that they should first inform us or show us where the security zone ends and we are going to do a U-turn at the end or beginning of the security zone,” he said while speaking to Naa Ashorkor from the converging point of the protest, Obra Spot.
“If they will show us, then we are waiting for it.”
He further pointed out: “As we speak, they have not informed us where the security zone ends.
“So, our position is simple: We will march with the protesters and we hope to end at the beginning or the end of the security zone and then the leadership of the NDC Minority must be allowed into the Central Bank to deliver our petition.”
The protest has been occasioned not only by the GH¢60.8 billion loss recorded by the Central Bank in 2022 but also a decision to erect a state-of-the-art head office at a cost of over $200 million.
The Minority, which is leading the march, wants Governor Dr Ernest Yedu Kwamina Addision and his two deputies – Dr Maxwell Opoku Afari and Elsie Addo Awadzi – to resign.They gave the three as well as directors of the Bank 21 days to vacate their posts. The ultimatum has since elapsed.
The original date of the protest was Tuesday, September 5 but the Accra Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service secured an injunction to stop the protest. The matter is still in court.
A second notice to march on Tuesday, September 12 was also rejected by the Command.
This will, therefore, be the third notice to demonstrate against the Governor and his deputies as well as directors of the Central Bank.
An application in court by the police to stop this demonstration was held as ineffective by the High Court on Friday.The police have, consequently, assured the demonstrators and the public, in general, of providing adequate security.
“We wish to urge the organizers of the demonstration and all participants to cooperate with the Police and abide by the security arrangements in accordance with the Public Order Act,” the police said in a statement on Monday, October 2.
“We would like to assure the public that as always, the Police remain committed to working together with all stakeholders and the public at large, towards deepening our democratic credentials and ensuring peace, security, law and order in the country.”
