Stars Falling: Ghana slips to 70th in FIFA rankings

From 65th to 70th, the Black Stars are losing ground when they can least afford it

Ghana’s difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign has now hit the Black Stars on the FIFA rankings. The four-time African champions have fallen five places to 70th in the world.

Ghana dropped from 65th after losing 25.73 ranking points. The latest standings also leave the Black Stars 14th among African nations.

The ranking, released on Wednesday, October 7, reflects the results of 338 men’s international matches played since the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended on July 19. Those games included UEFA and Concacaf Nations League fixtures, as well as 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

For Ghana, the damage came largely from two painful defeats. The Black Stars lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before suffering a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Those results have left Ghana without a point from their first two Group C matches. The home defeat was especially damaging, with supporters left frustrated as hopes of a strong start quickly faded.

The poor run also added to the pressure around Carlos Queiroz. The Portuguese coach left his position by mutual consent after winning only one of his seven matches in charge.

The latest slide adds another chapter to a difficult period for Ghana. The Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, missing the tournament for the first time since 2004.

There is, however, a chance to change the mood. Ghana will face Somalia twice in November, with their opponents currently ranked 200th in the world.

Six points from those games would provide a major lift to the qualification campaign and could also help Ghana recover ground in the FIFA rankings.

At the top of Africa, Morocco remain seventh in the world, while Senegal sit 18th. Côte d’Ivoire are 29th, with Nigeria four places lower at 30th.

For Ghana, the message is simple. The Black Stars need results, and quickly, before the slide becomes harder to stop.
