African business magnate Aliko Dangote has commended President John Dramani Mahama for what he describes as a swift improvement in Ghana’s economic fortunes.

Mr Dangote attributed the development largely to renewed confidence in the Ghanaian economy, saying investment tends to follow when trust is restored.

He made the remarks at the “Accra Reset: Full Circle – Making Global Development Work Again” event in New York, held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

According to Mr Dangote, Ghana’s economic conditions were previously challenging, but President Mahama’s administration took what he described as the appropriate steps to address the situation.

He said the improvement did not come from extraordinary measures, but from restoring confidence and implementing the right policies.

Mr Dangote summed up the relationship between confidence and investment with the statement that “money follows trust.”

His comments come as the Mahama administration continues to highlight economic stabilisation and investor confidence as key outcomes of its Resetting Ghana agenda.

The government has pointed to developments including lower inflation, a stronger cedi, improved fiscal performance and increased foreign exchange reserves as signs of economic recovery.
