Real Madrid remain confident of landing RB Leipzig star Yan Diomande, but one of the summer’s biggest transfer stories has taken another dramatic turn. While the Spanish giants continue talks over a blockbuster move, an ongoing dispute over the teenager’s representation has slowed negotiations, leaving football’s most talked about transfer in limbo.
The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international has emerged as one of Europe’s brightest young stars. After producing 23 goal contributions in his breakthrough season with RB Leipzig and impressing on the World Cup stage, Diomande quickly became one of the hottest properties on the market.
Madrid moved ahead of Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool in the race for his signature. Reports suggest personal terms have already been agreed, but Leipzig continue to stand firm on a fee believed to be around €130 million, a figure that would make Diomande both Real Madrid’s record signing and the most expensive African footballer in history.
Despite widespread reports claiming the deal was complete, Leipzig managing director Marcel Schäfer insists there is still work to do. “It’s clear that one or two so-called transfer experts announced a few days ago that the deal was done or ‘here we go’, that’s simply not the case. It’s not that far along yet,” he said in an interview.
Schäfer also revealed that Diomande is still recovering from an injury sustained around the World Cup. “Yan is on the road to recovery. I spoke to him on the phone yesterday. As soon as he’s recovered and feels ready, he’ll make the trip to Austria and join us. Yan is under contract with us, he’s our player.”
Behind the scenes, the biggest obstacle is no longer the transfer fee. FIFA is now involved in a dispute between former representative Max Gradel’s Maxidel agency and Roc Nation Sports, which now represents the winger. The disagreement has delayed the paperwork, although Leipzig remain unconcerned.
“From my perspective, a clear no,” Schäfer said when asked if the issue could derail the transfer. “Yan clearly informed us that Roc Nation is our contact. I don’t believe that a transfer would fail because of this, if it even comes to fruition.”
The saga now enters another crucial chapter. Madrid remain determined, Leipzig remain patient, and Diomande’s future appears to be a matter of when, rather than if.
