Your penchant for punitive measures collapsing telecom sector – Sam George to Ursula

A member of the Communications committee in Parliament Samuel Nartey George has blamed a decline in Ghana’s Telecommunications sector on the penchant of the Ministry of Communications and the National Communications Authority to issue punitive measures.

Sam George believes this has already led to the collapse of two Mobile Network Operators and a weakening of the other two players.

The Ningo Prampram MP’s concerns come after many Ghanaians took to their social media to lament what they consider a mistreatment from the NCA with regards to the re registration of their sim cards.

Some say even though they have not been issued a Ghana card through no fault of theirs and therefore cannot re register their sim cards, their cards have still been blocked as part of the NCA’s punitive measures.

On Tuesday, the Communications Minister said if Ghanaians suffer sanctions due to their own inaction, they should not blame service providers because to be forewarned is to be forearmed.

It was in response to these that Sam George said the first principle of public policy should be as a service not as a punishment.

“When you realise that you actually serve the people and not the reverse, a lot more attention may be given to the service experience as against a punishment regime” he noted.
