There hasn’t been a withdrawal of Speaker’s security detail – Nat’l Security Ministry
The Ministry of National Security has stated that there has been no withdrawal of any member of the Speaker of Parliament’s security detail.
This follows a letter making the rounds on social media, addressed to the Office of the Speaker of Parliament indicating that some four officials from the Ghana Armed Forces attached to the Speaker’s office had to be withdrawn.
Reasons stated for the withdrawal was that the four officers were assigned “without proper procedure” and there was the need to “regularise their attachment.”
In a press release dated January 25, 2022, the sector ministry explained that military officers do not form part of the security detail of members of the legislature.
Thus, by temporarily withdrawing the said officers, there has been no “reduction in the security strength at Parliament.”
Further clarifying that the “security detail for the Speaker and Parliament is provided by the Ghana Police Service.”
The ministry also noted that “all requisite resources including logistics and personnel required for the full protection of the Speaker have been provided” and that security arrangements for the House and all its members “have been significantly enhanced.”
