TEWU to strike on Jan. 5 over non-payment of allowances
The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), says it will begin an industrial action effective Wednesday, January 5, 2022 over non-payment of their professional development allowances.
According to the union, the strike has become necessary after several attempts to get government to resolve their grievances proved futile.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, General Secretary of the Union, Mark Dankyira Korankye said, “We wish to inform the government and its agencies, parents and the Ghanaian public that as schools reopen tomorrow, 5th January 2022, they should not expect any of the non-teaching staff to be at post to render service.”
TEWU comprises of administrators, accountants, logistics and supply officers, cleaners, pantry hands, cooks, matrons, bursars, internal auditors in schools at various levels of education.
Earlier, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged the various labour unions, especially teachers to use dialogue and consensus building to resolve their grievances with government instead of embarking on industrial actions but Mr Korankye said, after more than 4 months of engagement with government, no concrete action has been taken.
“It is said that to be forewarned is to be forearmed. Otumfuo rightly appealed that dialogue and consensus building is what we need and we have given all these opportunities. We wrote to GES management, they responded, they invited us to a meeting and they said let’s form a technical committee and it has taken already 4 months without even the first meeting so we think that if we don’t take the necessary steps, our members rights will be trampled upon,” he added.
