Skin Types : The Five Different Skin Types

It becomes a real headache for some people when presented with the “What’s your skins type?” question. It can be quite hectic to figure out as it is not as easy as it sounds. Knowing your skin type can help formulate a skincare regimen that leaves your skin looking and feeling healthy at all times.

If you have been using every product recommended to you under the sun, then it is highly possible you do not know your skin type or just how to properly address it. Just like a relationship, it can take a bit of effort to figure it all out.

Let’s start off with learning the types of Skin Types.

So there are basically 5 types of skin.

  • Oily skin
  • Dry skin
  • Normal/ Balance skin
  • Sensitive skin and
  • Combination skin type.

Mind you, the existence of these multiple skin types does not necessarily mean you are just one skin type. No. Skin profile can also change overtime with hormonal, climatic, diet or even environmental changes. It therefore becomes very necessary to keep a close eye on your skin just so you notice the changes that may occur and handle them as you should.

Oily Skin Type

Oily/Acne Prone Skin Type.

Having an oily skin is both a blessing and a pain in the neck sometimes. Your skin is moisturized on its own but at the same time prone to blackheads and acne. It is very unlikely for an oily skin to develop early wrinkles which is one of the most absolute good parts.

Oily skin mostly have larger appearing pores, with shiny looking skin mostly at the end of the day.

Makeup often melts away few hours after being worn and heavy products do not do you any justice at all as it may lead to breakout.

Incase you find you find yourself in this group, try as much as possible to practice the following:

  • Do not use harsh products
  • Do not use alcohol-based products
  • Never use sunscreen with low SPF
  • Avoid the use of hydrating primers and greasy skincare products
  • Avoid complicated skincare routines
  • Always stay hydrated
  • Avoid super-gentle cleansers

Dry Skin Type

Dry Skin Type

Dry skin unlike oily skin does not produce enough oil in the skin, thus, regular moisture has is very much needed. Sometimes, the skin become extra dry as a result of the products we introduce to our skin. They cause skin “tightness” which is a sign of the skin being stripped off it’s natural producing oils.

Dry skin often has small invisible pores, rough patches, fine lines and wrinkles, coupled a dull looking complexion.

If you fall in this category, it is important you introduce a  little TLC to your skin to keep it in check and healthy at all times.

  • Avoid  over-exfoliating
  • Avoid the use of products that contain glycolic acid
  • Never skip out applying moisturizer
  • Do not apply moisturize without dampening your skin first
  • Always stay hydrated.

Normal/ Balance Skin Type

To all who fall under this blessing…how does it feel to be the most favorite child of the Lord himself?

This is by far the rarest skin type to ever be graced with breakouts and other related issues. Pores appear very normal with just the right amount of oil secretion, that keeps the skin in check at all times.

Most people with balanced skin barely go the extra length to take care of their skin because they believe there is no need to. However, it is important to make it a habit to take care of this skin type.

It is advisable to therefore

  • wash your face at night
  • Never miss moisturizing time and
  • Always wear SPF
  • Always stay hydrated

Sensitive Skin Type

Sensitive Skin Type

Sensitive skin is often confused with dry skin. It is a fragile skin, usually accompanied by feelings of discomfort such as heat, tightness, itchiness and redness of skin.

It is a delicate skin that needs more care to fight dryness, roughness and its usual rough appearance.

This skin type loses its barrier of protection, making it easy for microorganisms and irritant substances to enter it, increasing the possibility of having an infection and allergic reaction.

With this skin type, it is necessary that you do the needful.

  • Avoid the use of harsh exfoliants
  • Do not over-washing
  • Avoid the use of toners
  • Cultivate the habit of wearing sunscreen
  • Always stay hydrated.

Combination Skin Type

This is by far the most common skin type of all the five differ types. It presents characteristics of both dry and oily skin since the distribution of sebaceous and sweat glands is not homogeneous.

The area with oil is usually the T-zone (the forehead, nose and chin),while the skin on the cheek is normal or dry. There are no many “one size fits all” products for this type of skin so, combo has to be of master mind when choosing products. [Read: Combination skin products ]

If you happen to have this type of skin,

  • Never forget to exfoliate
  • Never limit yourself to one face mask (as one type may not address both dry and oily needs of your skin)
  • Do not skip-out on moisturizing
  • Do not pass on putting on primer and finally
  • Always stay hydrated.
