Sim Card Re-Registration: Cancel draconian punitive measures immediately – Minority tells NCA

The Minority in Parliament are demanding the immediate withdrawal of the measures introduced by the National Communications Authority (NCA) as punishment to persons who have not yet registered their sim cards.

Ranking Member on the Communications Committee of Parliament, ABA Fuseini addressing the media in Parliament said the NCA has no justification to impose such sanctions.

“Given that millions of those who do not currently have their cards have done their parts to secure it without success, the Ministry of Communications and by extension the NCA has no valid reason or justification to impose punitive measures on them as is being meted out to them,” he indicated.

Thousands of Ghanaians massed up at various telcos offices across the country to check the status of their sim cards after some who claimed they had registered were barred from making calls on Friday, September 9, 2022.

Others who had registered for the Ghana Card but had not been issued a card were equally barred from making calls as the Ghana card remains the sole ID for the sim card registration exercise.

The Minority believes these sanctions are “very draconian” and should be immediately cancelled.

They are also calling on government “to provide the requisite level of resources (funding) to enable the NIA to open more offices, recruit more staff, materials and equipment needed to accelerate the tempo of the registration exercise.”

This, they believe, will address the issue of long queues at registration centers for the Ghana card.
